What happens to my used batteries?

Used batteries are considered small hazardous waste (SHW) and therefore should not be mixed with other waste fractions such as residual waste. It is important to always store them separately and collect them correctly. This ensures they pose no risk and can be properly recycled. They contain many important and scarce raw materials that can be reused in new applications.

When you bring your used batteries to a Bebat collection point, their new life begins. First, they are collected and taken to Sortbat, our sorting centre in Tienen. There, they are sorted into various main categories.

After sorting, the batteries are sent to specialist recycling companies, where they are recycled to recover as many raw materials as possible.

From your used batteries, we extract many rare materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and lead. These raw materials are given a new life in various products: from new batteries to bicycles, frames for glasses, building materials, and much more. Furthermore, these raw materials do not need to be extracted again from nature.

By properly recycling used batteries, we also prevent harmful substances from ending up in the environment. Your small gesture makes a big difference! Because recycling together is better for all of us.
